Georgia Wilson On The Fight For England Shirts Best Friends But World Cup Rivals

St Helens captain Jodie Cunningham is pleased that rugby league contributed to bringing record crowds of people watching women's sports in 2022. much higher than the numbers in 2021. Jodie believes there's more to come.

The Women's Sport Trust revealed on Thursday that in the UK more than one third of the people (21.1m) was tuned in to watch women's sports in the initial five months in 2022. This is three times more than figures of last year.

Cunningham who is an England international superstar and also an Football League's National Women's and Girls Development Manager, was delighted by the growth in numbers.

"It's already been a fantastic year for women's sport, and it's so important that rugby league is part of that success," she declared.

It was the Betfred Women's Challenge Cup final at Elland Road was the biggest reason for the growth in numbers. The game was broadcast in real-time on BBC Two and it pulled viewers to a peak of 300,000 viewers. It also drew an historic crowd into the stadium with 5,888 people in attendance to see St Helens come from behind to defeat Leeds Rhinos. The popularity of women's soccer is rising and is a positive factor for women's sports across all sports.

The coverage of women's rugby league will become more extensive when next weekend, Sky Sports' expanded coverage of women's rugby league for 2022 starts off with England's mid-season international against France. Sky Sports will show Betfred women's Super League fixtures leading up to the Grand Final on September 18th.

Cunningham said: "Our Challenge Cup Final reached a new level this year, with an unprecedented crowd on Elland Road and more than 300,000 people watching on BBC2 It's amazing that Sky will once again show the Mid-Season International as well as more women's Super League matches than ever.

"There are many ways to view women's rugby league -- BBC Sport also showed the Challenge Cup semi finals double header on iPlayer as well as which is the official app of RFL. Our League app has offered streaming of live games from the Challenge Cup and the Super League and The Sportsman have also been an excellent supporter of women's football and have covered the regular Super League games and this weekend's international game in Wales.

Georgia Wilson admits she didn't exactly be aware of the rules of her game when she arrived for a trial of the rugby league at Wigan four years ago.

"We are friends but we are all fighting for the same shirts so need to perform both in camps and in the games as well," she told The Sportsman.

A 25-year old player native of Cumbria is the sole Wigan participant in the head coach Craig Richards' England side and has grown from a anxious trialist into an impressive and reliable international.

Wilson used to play rugby union while student on the campus of UCLAN when she first discovered league . She hasn't ever looked back.

On the wing in order to have a chance to experience and understand the game she played, she was becoming a Grand Finalist in her first Ladies' Super League season in 2018 even scoring an attempt in the process as Wigan won the title beating Leeds.

This season has been a year of Wilson playing at fullback, and she's already reached the double figures in tries and is also a reliable goal-kicker. Wilson played in the England team that beat Wales 32-6 at the weekend and a country they beat six times in the past and something Wilson says proves that women's football is headed toward the proper direction.

"It was really nice to get out there with the girls and a great opportunity for us all to get together," she told The Sportsman, as they get together ahead of Saturday's double-header with the men's international match at Warrington.

"Wales were a physical side and did better than last year and I think France will be the same, they are improving and developing like us and will come out and be a really physical side which is what we need for the World Cup."

Wilson hopes that the growing health of women's soccer will be rewarded by an impressive turnout at Halliwell Jones Stadium, with the men's team facing an Combined Nations All Star team on the same day.

It's these moments that are crucial to encouraging the future generation of stars to learn, love as well as be encouraged by the sport of rugby league.

"Hopefully the game will be in front of a big home support and our family and friends, but also young girls coming through at community clubs," Wilson says.

"We have been handing out tickets for those to come and get an experience of what it is like and hopefully they look up to us as role models and we can influence them to do the same in the future."

The 24 players in the England Women's team is made up of 17 players from the heavyweights St Helens and Leeds along with four players from the thriving York City Knights who lead the early Betfred Women's Super League table winning the three matches in their first three games.

They will begin with their World Cup campaign against Brazil at Headingley on November 1, and will also play Canada as well as Papua New Guinea in the group stage.
